Problems set forth in textbooks are usually stated in a brief, dry manner. They state the facts without the benefit of a diagram to capture the attention of the reader. Also, there is no indication as to why the problem should be solved, except that it is supposed to test the student’s knowledge. Finally, a single question usually accompanies the problem, leaving the student to figure out how to find the answer. The Wildi Industrial Problems are presented in a different way. First of all, they state in a brief paragraph the reason why the particular problem is of interest. Next, the data and the nature of the problem are given, along with a simple diagram. But instead of asking a single question, to which the student is asked to find the single answer, the Wildi Industrial Problem is followed by a series of questions that eventually lead to the desired solution.
The series of questions take the student by the hand, so to speak and, as he works out the answer to each question, he is reassured that he is on the right track. Another advantage is that instead of getting discouraged by not finding the answer to a single-question problem, the student discovers that he or she is able to answer several related questions successfully. This develops confidence, and stimulates the student to keep on working to the end. References are cited along with the Problem. They give the Sections and Tables in my book that are pertinent to the problem. This is particularly useful because the Wildi Industrial Problems are not end-of-chapter items wherein the student knows where to look for the required information. Of course, the student may use any other references that are available to him. Answers to the individual questions are also given, providing a further intellectual stimulus for the student. The answers are often given in rounded figures, as they would be in industry. Consequently, they may not be the precise computer value worked out by the student. However, the student’s answer is considered to by correct if it is within 1 % of the listed answer. Finally, by clicking on the Solution button the entire solution can be accessed and displayed. However, you should refrain from looking at this page until you have made a serious effort to solve the problem by yourself. The solution will sometimes include practical comments and notes. These additional bits of information will be appreciated by the reader. Another good reason to look at this revealing section. A new Wildi Industrial Problem is presented every two weeks. The problems are designated as Practical, Intermediate or Advanced. You should try to solve every problem, irrespective of your level of learning. The reason is that all the problems contain practical and useful information. |
